Remote access that isn't a hole in the wall
Home and hybrid working turned remote access from a convenience into core infrastructure, and a lot of it was stood up quickly in 2020 and never revisited. Exposing RDP directly to the internet, or a VPN with no second factor and shared credentials, is how a great many businesses have been breached. Site-to-site and client VPN terminating on the firewall, with multi-factor authentication in front of it, closes that off without making people's day harder.
Segmentation, so one machine isn't every machine
A flat network is the reason a single infected laptop becomes a company-wide incident: once something is inside, nothing stops it reaching the file server, the backup target and everything else. Splitting the network so that guest wi-fi, card payment systems, CCTV and building controls can't reach your servers limits how far an intrusion travels. It also stops the printer being a route to your finance system, which sounds facetious and isn't.
Logs someone actually looks at
A firewall generates a great deal of information about what is being blocked, what is being allowed and what is behaving oddly, and on most networks nobody ever reads it. That record is also what an insurer or an incident responder will ask for after the fact, when it is too late to start collecting it.
